My mother, Phebe Betty, was a giver. Sometimes she gave until it made me, as tender young child, concerned. As a little girl, I could never understand why she would give so flowingly and freely to others. On a particular occasion my mother had three packs of cookies. We, her eleven children, had to share two packs between us; and so, we only had about two cookies each. This was because she had given the other pack to a little girl who only had one brother. Was my mother unknowingly teaching me something? Yes, she was teaching me to be kind. She taught me kindness, sharing and compassion.
The cookie scenario happened often at our church, and it did create in me feelings of concern. Now as an adult, I have grown to become very proud of my mother, who always helped children and adults alike. She taught women how to sew, crochet, and also how to make soft toys. She taught her children to give.
During a visit to Liberia, West Africa, Phebe Betty passed away while kindly and compassionately serving others. Betty's Room at the Crossroad was created by me in honor of my mother Phebe Betty, and is truly inspired by her.
Also ~ Phebe Betty loved flowers & kept a lovely garden.
